4 Things You Should Do If You Chip a Tooth

Man with chipped tooth

It’s easy to start panicking if or when you suddenly chip a tooth. After all, it’s not a typical day-to-day situation. “Is this something I can fix?” “Will this be permanent?” “What am I supposed to do?” Worries like these can start piling up in your mind very quickly.

Still, you needn’t over-worry yourself: here are four steps to managing a chipped tooth from a Raleigh dentist. Follow them so you’ll have a chance at restoring your smile to its former self!

Rinse Out Your Mouth

Immediately after the chipping takes place, rinse your mouth with warm water. Doing so will keep the area clean and clear away any blood or dirt.

Know that part of your broken tooth may come out after the rinse. While this might seem frightening, this is actually a good thing. Having it out of your mouth prevents you from swallowing or biting down on it.

Stop the Bleeding

If the incident that chipped your tooth results in bleeding, put pressure on the affected area with a clean towel or gauze. This action will help stop the bleeding and reduce the risk of swallowing too much blood.

Don’t scrub or irritate the area since it may cause pain or increase bleeding. Instead, hold steady pressure on the tooth or gums with minimal movement.

Apply a Cold Compress

A cold compress applied to your injury will help alleviate pain and swelling.  Cold temperatures constrict blood vessels and slow blood flow around your mouth. As a result, the compress will minimize inflammation, numb the area, and stop the bleeding.

If you don’t have a cold compress available, apply a Ziplock bag filled with ice and wrapped in a towel.

See Your Dentist for Treatment

You should seek dental treatment very soon after chipping your tooth. Even if the injury doesn’t hurt, it might cause significant problems. The fracture could lead to infections and more dental issues.

Furthermore, dentist could provide various treatments to fix the chip’s cosmetic damage to your smile. Metal-free restorations like crowns would hide gaps and cracks caused by the lost tooth portion. They could also try direct bonding that applies tooth-colored resin to the damaged area. Whatever the case, a dentist’s services could undo the harm to your teeth’s appearance.

A chipped tooth isn’t the end of the world — just remember the steps above and things should be fine!

I've been coming to this practice for years now since moving to the Raleigh area. The office is always clean and organized and the staff have always been friendly and communicative. Also, the TV's mounted to the ceiling are a nice touch! I've been seeing Dr. Laster for several years before our insurance changed causing me to change to Dr. Rensch. Both are so easy to talk to and always made me feel at ease.

From beginning to end 5/5! I thought I was experiencing a dental 911. I submitted an inquiry at 11:30pm and by 8am the next morning, Deidra (front office staff) was already leaving me a message. She was so sweet and patient at 8am lol. After our initial conversation, I informed all follow up dentists “I found my dentist office” but thank you so much! Today I was welcomed with the same energy from Diedre to Britany then finally Dr.Wrench. The music playing throughout the office was fantastic; ie music selection and volume. The TV’s on the ceiling and wall made my procedure so painless and enjoyable! I watched an entire Christmas movie lol! Dr. Wrench (apologies for spelling) made my teeth absolutely perfect! I left telling my friends and family I have a million dollar smile! 😊 I can tell he wanted them perfect and he did! Thank you all so much for being amazing! Sincerely, Your next patient.

Dr. Laster and Dr. Rensch go above and beyond for their patients. I have seen both for various treatments and I always feel comfortable and heard. They take time to listen and to talk with you. They explain your options and work with you to develop the best plan for your care. They are always upbeat and positive and you can tell they truly love what they do. The front desk staff is exceptional as well. Deidre is so caring and very sweet. She’s efficient, understanding and conscientious of your time. I highly recommend.

Connections Dentistry was great! The staff is so friendly and truly cares about their patients. My appointment was quick, and honestly the best dental experience I’ve had. They are great about offering helpful solutions without making you feel like you are being reprimanded… which was the reason I was putting off the dentist. 100% recommend!
