5 Foods That Maintain Your Gum Health

Various fresh produce of all colors, including but not limited to cabbage, cauliflower, bell peppers, cucumbers, apples, eggplants, grapes, and oranges

Gum disease is more common than you might think. Studies show that about 50% of Americans suffer from some form of gum disease. However, just because a lot of people have it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be taken seriously. When it’s caught early, gum disease can be treated and even reversed. A combination of keeping up with your regular dental checkups, a good oral hygiene routine, and dietary changes can help your gums immensely. Here are 5 foods that can maintain your gum health and prevent gum disease.

1. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

The vitamins and nutrients of fresh fruits and vegetables help boost your immune system and have anti-inflammatory properties. Fibrous fruits and vegetables can increase your saliva production, clean your teeth of food debris, and lower your risk of plaque buildup.

Consider adding bell peppers in particular to your diet! Red and green bell peppers are high in vitamin C, which can provide a boost for fighting gum disease.

2. Whole Grains

Eating whole grains, such as brown rice or oatmeal, can help protect and maintain your oral health. Whole grains provide essential fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to your diet.

For example, the B vitamins and iron keep your gums healthy, and the magnesium in whole grains keep your bones and teeth strong.

3. Probiotic Foods

By eating probiotic foods, you can encourage healthy bacteria in your body, reducing plaque buildup. Probiotics can also form a sheath for oral tissues and protect them from gum disease.

Some examples of probiotic foods to incorporate into your diet are yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut.

4. Dairy Products

Dairy products are full of the essential nutrient calcium. Current research shows that people who regularly consume dairy products reduce their risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Milk has been linked to fewer cavities by replenishing the calcium stores in your body that strengthen your gum tissue and tooth enamel.

5. Foods High in Omega-3

Foods that are high in omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reverse gum disease. One excellent source of omega-3s is fatty or oily fish. Eating mackerel, salmon, herring, sardines, anchovies, oysters, or cod liver oil can benefit your gum health. Another way to get omega-3s in your diet are foods such as flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, soybeans, pistachios, and macadamia nuts.

I've been coming to this practice for years now since moving to the Raleigh area. The office is always clean and organized and the staff have always been friendly and communicative. Also, the TV's mounted to the ceiling are a nice touch! I've been seeing Dr. Laster for several years before our insurance changed causing me to change to Dr. Rensch. Both are so easy to talk to and always made me feel at ease.

From beginning to end 5/5! I thought I was experiencing a dental 911. I submitted an inquiry at 11:30pm and by 8am the next morning, Deidra (front office staff) was already leaving me a message. She was so sweet and patient at 8am lol. After our initial conversation, I informed all follow up dentists “I found my dentist office” but thank you so much! Today I was welcomed with the same energy from Diedre to Britany then finally Dr.Wrench. The music playing throughout the office was fantastic; ie music selection and volume. The TV’s on the ceiling and wall made my procedure so painless and enjoyable! I watched an entire Christmas movie lol! Dr. Wrench (apologies for spelling) made my teeth absolutely perfect! I left telling my friends and family I have a million dollar smile! 😊 I can tell he wanted them perfect and he did! Thank you all so much for being amazing! Sincerely, Your next patient.

Dr. Laster and Dr. Rensch go above and beyond for their patients. I have seen both for various treatments and I always feel comfortable and heard. They take time to listen and to talk with you. They explain your options and work with you to develop the best plan for your care. They are always upbeat and positive and you can tell they truly love what they do. The front desk staff is exceptional as well. Deidre is so caring and very sweet. She’s efficient, understanding and conscientious of your time. I highly recommend.
