There are all sorts of reasons why you may skip a dental cleaning. For some people, a busy schedule gets in the way, but for others, it can be a result of dental anxiety or just plain forgetfulness. While it may not seem like a big deal, when you aren’t going to the dental office as often as you should, you could end up with numerous negative consequences. Tooth Decay
This is the most common oral health problem out there. Even if you are very diligent about brushing and flossing each day, there will still be some areas of your mouth that you’re going to miss. When you go to the dentist for regular cleanings, a dental hygienist will remove missed buildups of plaque and tartar so that they don’t cause any further issues in the future. Your dentist will also check for existing decay so that it can be treated early on. This way, you will be less likely to require a root canal or extraction to restore the health of your smile.
Periodontal Disease
Your oral health isn’t just about your teeth. Having healthy gum tissue is necessary in order to support strong teeth. Approximately half of adults over the age of 30 are suffering from gum disease at one severity or another, so it is always something that your dentist keeps an eye out for. When left to progress, periodontal disease can cause gum recession, loose teeth, or tooth loss entirely. The good news is that this condition is easily avoidable with proper oral hygiene and regular visits to the dental office.
Discoloration
At the end of your cleaning, your dental hygienist will conclude your treatment by polishing your teeth with a special paste. This is done in order to remove surface stains and leave you with a healthier smile. When you aren’t having this done regularly, you may end up with increased discoloration that can only be reverse with cosmetic treatment.
Other Health Problems
Your oral health and overall health have more in common than you may think. This is why your dentist is always keeping an eye out for abnormalities during your dental visits. In addition to checking for cavities and gum disease, they will also look for signs of oral cancer, kidney failure, hypertension, heart disease, and even diabetes.
Even though skipping a dental cleaning doesn’t seem very serious, it can lead to a variety of consequences. By seeing your dentist on the regular, you can significantly reduce your likelihood of dental (and medical) issues later on.
